Ementia Awareness: Are our devices driving us out of our minds?

By Danny Murphy, Executive Director of the Ementia Institute
Ementia is a brain disease that causes a decrease in a person’s ability to think clearly. It gradually progresses to the point that it interferes with a person's daily activities. Ementia is emerging as one of the most serious health issues Americans will face in the 21st century.
Increasing numbers of people are voluntarily allowing themselves to be ebotomized, a process by which portions of the brain are rendered useless through excessive use of electronic devices including tablet and laptop computers, smartphones, gaming consoles, etc.
One in ten Americans suffers from Ementia. One in five Americans are at risk. Common symptoms of Ementia include:
  • isolation
  • emotional problems including depression and anxiety
  • decreased motivation
  • poor judgment and reasoning
  • inability to focus and pay attention
  • decreased communication skills
  • lack of awareness of one’s surroundings
  • memory problems, short or long term
  • trouble keeping track of keys, wallets, or purses
  • arriving at a destination and forgetting why you went there
  • trouble planning and preparing meals, or simply forgetting to eat regularly.
Warning signs that you may be suffering from Ementia.
The following are signs that you might be suffering from Ementia or thatg you are at risk for developing this debilitating disease.
  • You spend more time in virtual relationships than you do interacting with real people.
  • You’ve caused a car accident while texting.
  • You’ve missed work or lost a job due to your excessive use of social media.
  • You check in on social media immediately upon waking up in the morning, several times per hour throughout the day, and just before going to sleep at night.
  • You’ve been told by family and friends that you spend too much time looking at your devices, or that your personality has changed.
  • You’ve been injured by stepping off a cliff, bridge, or other high place, or by stepping in front of a moving vehicle, or train, because you weren’t paying enough attention to where you were while taking a selfie or playing a game like Pokemon Go.
For some sufferers of Ementia, detoxification procedures including Twitter-ectomies, Facebook-ectomies, and Snapchat-ectomies have produced promising short-term results. However, many Ementia victims suffer such severe withdrawal symptoms that they return to using the social media of their choosing before completing a sufficient period of detox.
If you think you may be at risk for developing  Ementia, or if you have a loved one who is suffering from Ementia, Ementia Treatment Centers of America can help. Call 1-800-EMENTIA. Help is available. If you don’t get help here, get help somewhere.
The Ementia Awareness Foundation is currently petitioning Congress to pass legislation requiring warnings like the following on many electronic devices.
Caution: Use of this device may lead to Ementia. This device may also lead to addiction and lack of awareness of one’s surroundings and of other people. In some cases, the lack of awareness due to Ementia may lead to serious injury or death. Use this device at your own risk.
The Ementia Awareness Foundation (EAF) is educating the public about the dangers of Ementia. The EAF is also doing research to find the cure for Ementia. Please support the work of the EAF by donating or by participating in a Walk to End Ementia.
